4 Ways to Enjoy the Journey

A Beach-Inspired Tale of Two Shells...

As I walked along the beach last week, I discovered the points of a large shell poking out of the surf. Big shells that make it to the beach are usually battered and broken. But this one looked promising.

I waded into the receding waves to unearth the shell. Dug deeply into the sand, it was pretty, pink, and perfect! I rinsed it off and proceeded with a pleased smile.

On my return trek, I came across a second shell rolling in on a wave. It reminded me of the cartoon drawing with the old lady telling us to “enjoy the ride!” The same type and size as my perfect find, this shell carried barnacles. The points were worn off. Scars and holes marred the gray carcass. And yet, my heart thrilled with joy at the sight of that ugly shell rolling in on a wave.

My muse whispered and I was inspired to share this lesson on enjoying the journey.

1. Choose Experience Over Appearance

Sure, the perfect pink shell is prettier. But it’s no fun being a trophy sitting on a shelf. Stop worrying about messing up your hair or getting your nails dirty. Roll down the windows, turn up the music, and drive to the beach! Romp in the water and relax on the sand. Live a life worth living!

2. Get Your Head Out of the Sand

Being buried by an overloaded schedule, excess responsibility, or outright fear means merely existing. Rise above the mire. Step away from work or out of the house. Lift your head out of the sand, look up at the bright sunshine, and enjoy life!

3. Roll with the Tide

High tide can drown us. Low tide can leave us stranded. Fear of rejection, loss, or failure may tempt us to clam up. But when a threat looms, we need to be agile and prepare to weather the storm. Rather than dig in our heels, we must roll with the tide not only to survive, but to thrive!

4. Step Out in Faith

No one ever found love without risking a broken heart. No one ever fought for a promotion without risking a bruised ego. And no one ever started a business, wrote a book, or invented a product without risking failure. So say your prayers, listen for God’s leading, and trust Him. Step out in faith and enjoy the journey!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:5-6
